The
Redding Rodeo Association started out in the 1940's as a group of horse
enthusiasts who put on horse shows and rodeos.
Under the leadership of the sheriff John Balma, the group became the Shasta
County Sheriff's Posse in about 1947. About that time, the rodeo grounds
were moved to their present location at 715 Auditorium Drive. The
Sheriff's Posse formed the Drill Team from the very beginning to enjoy their
riding skills and promote horsemanship. Criteria was male riders, member
of the Posse, a black horse (some have been dyed) and to have the matching
outfits. In 1983 the Sheriff's department disbanded the Sheriff's Posse
and the members split into two groups. The Asphalt Cowboys work with the
Redding Rodeo Association (RRA) to promote Rodeo and help put on our Special
Kids Day where we bring in about three hundred handicapped kids to have horse
rides, pictures, cowboy hats and ice cream. The Rodeo Association is
responsible for putting on one of the biggest rodeos in California with all
volunteer members. Members participate in fund raisers annually to help
keep the Association strong. Also there are the affiliated groups: Women's
Auxiliary, Women's Rodeo Association and the Junior Rodeo Association all
promoting horsemanship.
Presently the Drill Team is made up of fifteen
riders, men and women ranging from eighteen to sixty something. Twelve
line riders, three flag carriers and the Drillmaster still use the same matching
tack to put on a performance that is exciting and high speed. The Drill
Team has performed in local rodeos, parades, color guards, as well as competing
in Reno drill competition and Grand National color guard competition.
Drill riders belong to various other riding groups and enjoy using their horses
for roping, penning, cattle work and other activities. We are a strong
support group for our community and are always there should our support be
needed.
